BaoBao Festival Website

I’ve been volunteering with the BaoBao Festival, a West African dance and drumming festival that takes place in Boulder each March, for the past 7 years. I created a flat html website for the festival in 2005 and finally converted it to WordPress last week.

Working with the festival earned me an invite from Adjei and his wife Kari for a three-week trip to see their family in Ghana last Christmas.  I celebrated my 40th birthday there sitting on a concrete floor, eating dry chocolate cookies and learning how to play the four variations of Oware, an abstract strategy game consisting of 12 wood cups and 48 seeds which you move from cup to cup — a serious, competitive adult game! The new BaoBao Festival site took about 8 hours to design and implement and uses:

• Customized version of Panorama Theme
• NextGen Gallery for photo galleries and a header slideshow using the JW Player
• Viper’s Video Quicktags for embedding YouTube videos
• Event Calendar (by Alex Tingle) to show upcoming events
• Customized page template with a customized WordPress loop using wp_query to show both the page content as well as the posts in the Events category
